Lab Testing

Two labs. Each one answers a different question.

You order the blood tests yourself, and the results come to you.

Iron status lives in blood, so pair the two when iron is the question you came with.

That blood panel link is an affiliate link, so Request A Test pays me a small commission and your price is the same.

The blood panel

Officially it is the Mag, Zinc and Copper Panel with Iron Panel plus Vitamin A and Vitamin D. Everyone in this world calls it the Full Monty.

GroupMarkersWhat it shows
Copper status
  • Ceruloplasmin (serum)
  • Copper (serum)
Copper that is bioavailable and doing work
Iron and how it moves
  • Iron and TIBC
  • Transferrin
  • Ferritin
  • Hemoglobin
Saturation, storage and inflammation
The cofactors
  • Magnesium RBC
  • Vitamin A (retinol)
  • Vitamin D (storage, 25-OH)
Magnesium inside the red cell, retinol and stored vitamin D
The rest of the picture
  • Zinc (plasma)
  • Uric acid
Zinc for context, uric acid for antioxidant status

If your laboratory runs a shorter menu, the five to insist on are ceruloplasmin, serum copper, serum iron with TIBC, magnesium RBC and retinol. Ceruloplasmin, retinol and magnesium RBC are the three that standard panels tend to leave to you.

Ordering the blood panel

  1. Order online. Use the link above and pay Request A Test. The requisition comes with the order.
  2. Get drawn. Take the requisition to a Quest or Labcorp draw site. Most locations take walk ins.
  3. Results arrive. Within a few business days, sent straight to you.
  4. Send me the PDF. Email it to hello@mineralshaman.com ahead of our session so I can read it first.

Outside the United States, clients have put this panel together in Canada, Europe, Australia and South America. Tell me where you are and I will tell you what has worked there.

The hair test

Trace Elements, a CLIA licensed clinical laboratory running hair since 1984, reports thirty six elements and twenty seven ratios from an unwashed sample.

Before you order

Do I need a doctor's order?

No. The requisition comes with your order.

How much does the panel cost?

Request A Test sets the price and shows it on their page, with any fasting instructions.

Do you make money from that link?

Yes, a small affiliate commission that Request A Test pays out of their own margin. Your price stays the same.

Can I start with hair instead?

Yes, many people do. Blood can follow when you can get it.

My doctor already ran labs. Can you use those?

Yes, in part. Send me what you have and I will tell you which markers to add.

How current do my results need to be?

Within about three months, and ideally within six weeks. Mineral status moves.

Should I change my supplements before the draw?

Carry on as you are and tell me what you take and when. That tells me more than a washout would.

Why is ferritin on the panel?

Read beside transferrin saturation and ceruloplasmin, ferritin is an inflammation signal. I wrote about this at length.
